Holy Technorati, Week 19

The Technorati arc has ended!

Unbelievably, Technorati has finally updated my blogs. Not only that, their ranks have been unhinged from each other, so they are now plausible. Instead of them being listed as having identical ranks on the order of ten million, this blog, Run Off, is down around 700,000, and Adventures in Bloggery is in the million and a half range. Woo-woo, I am 5 times more popular than someone you never heard of!

In a way, I'm disappointed. I had thought I could do Technorati Sucks until death. Now I have to find other things that suck to pick at.

Coming soon: Everything I can't stand about MySpace, beginning with Friend Requests from sluttyforyou with messages like "See the picture of my hot bod? Come see more of me at me_and_my_horny_girlfriends.com."

[Note to slutforyou: That's a nice bod, but it's not hot. Hot is when I care.]

I will have many more complaints about MySpace in a couple of days when I've finished fixing my site. I've decided recently that since it's there (Anitra created the account a year ago against my will) I might as well play with it. But what I am finding is that playing with MySpace is like playing catch with a monkey and a rock, with the monkey being the "ball."

Technorati Sucks, Week 18

Readers of my other blog, Adventures in Bloggery, where I have been posting my Real Change Adventures in Irony column, may have noticed that the latest column hasn't been posted yet. The reason it hasn't been posted is that Blogger's damn spam-detecting robot thought it saw something about the blog that meant it might be a spam blog. So I had to send a message to Blogger to start in motion a process of having one of their humans read the blog and verify what you and I know quite well, that it's not spam. This is taking time, and I am getting peeved.

My first reaction, in fact, when all this happened, was to think, "Oh no, Blogger is now turning out to suck just like Technorati." Then I realized that I was overreacting. It's only been one day. I'm sure Blogger will come through.

Why am I sure? I'm sure because I know that Blogger, which is run by Google, HAS humans, somewhere, in charge of their business.

Which brings me to today's point. The robots have taken over at Technorati! That's why they suck so much! The robots are in control! THE ROBOTS ARE IN CONTROL!

Someone call Homeland Security. Don't you see? It's obvious! Sometimes they do what they're supposed to do, allaying suspicions. BUT OTHER TIMES, LIKE WITH THIS BLOG, THEY BREAK THEIR PROGRAMMING, AND RUN AMOK!

[Pictures: Above, one of Rossum's Universal Robots, from the Karel Capek play R.U.R.; Below, January 1931 cover of Astounding Magazine, art by Hans Waldeman Wessolowski AKA "Wesso" (1893-1947)]

Technorati is run by robots; robots suck; therefore Technorati sucks.

Technorati Sucks, Week 17

Here's my favorite sucky math joke. Q. What's special about the number 17? A. It's the smallest prime, the sum of whose digits is 8!

Ha, ha, I never get tired of that joke.

How does a differential topologist visualize 96-dimensional smooth manifolds? He first visualizes N-dimensional smooth manifolds where N is greater than or equal to some sufficiently large number. Next, he does a calculation on the side to confirm that 96 is sufficiently large, for the purposes of the present discussion. Then he substitutes 96 for N.

Theorem. A cat has nine tails. Proof. No cat has eight tails. Since one cat has one more tail than no cat, it must have nine tails.

Q. What is purple and commutative?
A. An abelian grape...

Q. What is glazed and filled with jelly?
A. A topologist's coffee cup.

A statistician is a person who thinks he's average because he has one testicle and one ovary.

What is the difference between a Psychotic, a Neurotic and a mathematician? A Psychotic believes that 2+2=5. A Neurotic knows that 2+2=4, but it kills him. A mathematician doesn't care what 2+2 is, so long as 2 and + are well-defined and the axioms determine the value of the operation.

How much does Technorati suck? Let S be the set of all ways that Technorati sucks. If I remove any one element of S, the remaining set can be placed in one-to-one correspondence with the original set S. That's how much Technorati sucks.

Technorati Sucks, Week 16

Technorati has found a new way to suck! I don't know how they can be so creative!

Since Tim Harris registered his blog Apesma's Lament with Technorati, I naturally favorited it with them. Not because I needed Technorati to help me keep tabs on Tim's blog (I knew I'd be reading it regularly anyway) but because I wanted to see Technorati doing something right, to serve as a comparison when they screw things up.

Tim hasn't had any of the trouble I've had with Technorati, and up till now their updates of Apesma's Lament have been in order.

But today when I check "Posts from my 1 Favorite sorted by freshness" the freshest post of Apesma's Lament, the one posted today, wasn't there.

No problem I thought, anybody can be behind a little bit in updates. And in fact, all the other recent posts were listed. So, big deal, they just hadn't updated for this one day yet. By tomorrow everything will be there.

But then I noticed that the "freshest" post listed, "Tragedy Strikes, Cops Screw Victims" was listed as having been posted 4 days ago. That would mean it was posted July 9.

Well... ---->

Technorati is backdating Tim's posts for him! They couldn't have got the Tragedy Strikes post logged on their system before yesterday, because that's when it appeared. Tim didn't predate it. He didn't postdate it. He predated posts on an altogether different blog he just started up to feature his old Classics Corner column.

Could Technorati suck so bad it could predate posts just because it can? Just to screw up in new way for the sheer hell of it?

Yes!

Technorati Sucks, Week 15

Varieties of Sucking Experiences

You're in college, and you have to write a paper about a philosopher. William James, a certain well-known philosopher, once said the only time he could understand Hegel, another well-known philosopher, was when he (James) was high on nitrous oxide. Your professor wants the paper to be on Hegel, not James, and you have no drugs up to it.

You're 10, school's out, it's raining, and this is the only thing on TV.

Life sucks and, not only that, they ban your commercial in Britain for saying so, because "it's too harsh."

You have Technorati working for you.

Technorati Sucks, Week 14

It was in the Star Trek episode "Errand of Mercy" that Spock told Kirk that their odds of surviving their current adventure were "approximately" 7824.7 to one, thus proving once and for all that Spock may have been half-Vulcan, but he was all smart-ass, and all shit-full.

I woke up today to find that the ranking of this blog on Technorati was lower than ever. Then I checked the ranking of Adventures in Bloggery and had a hilarious surprise. Look at these screen shots, taken seconds apart:
Even though the two blogs were claimed on Technorati 26 days apart, they have sunk not only to the same low level, but to the exact same ranking.

"Hey, Spock, what do you suppose the odds are that two entirely different blogs with different aims and content and read by different audiences, that just happen to be by the same person, should wind up tied at 7,681,765 in Technorati's ratings?"

"If I were being approximate, Captain, I'd say 7824.7 to one."

"And what would say if you were being accurate, Spock?"

"I'd say Technorati sucks, Jim."

Technorati Sucks, Week 13

I'm aware that by complaining that Technorati sucks every week until they either stop sucking or I die, I may be giving the impression that they suck in some monumental noteworthy way, like death or taxes do. I don't want to exaggerate their suckiness so much. So to correct any misperceptions that might be out there, and put Technorati's sucking in perspective, I will list some things that suck very nearly approximately as much as Technorati does.

1. Having a state-of-the-art giant flat-screen HDTV up against one wall of your massive penthouse suite, and the batteries to the remote die. Then you break the remote, trying to follow the directions to change the batteries. Then you find out that they don't sell that kind of remote anymore, and your system doesn't work with a universal.

2. You just started eating a fantastic dinner that your Hindi friends engineered to be an 11 on the Indian-restaurant 1-5 hotness scale. You discover why they are giggling every time they say, "Have you tasted the pickles yet?" You and all your smart-ass giggling friends find out at the same time that all the beer is frozen.

3. Let's say your wife kicked you out of bed. Rather than sleep on the couch and hear her bitch at you every time she passes, you take off for the office. Your office is one of two dozen small offices off a long corridor. At 3 am you wake up needing to use the bathroom. It's way down the other end of the hall. You decide you're too sleepy to get dressed so you go wearing nothing but your shoes. When you return you find that you forgot to unset the lock when you closed your office door. You have to either break into your own office, or decide which of your coworkers you would most prefer to have catch you naked in their office when they show up around 8.

4. You stick your finger in a light socket, thinking, "Gee, I wonder what would happen if I stuck my finger in this light socket?" Your arm is numb for an hour, and all the lights go out in your half of Guadalajara (including the part pictured), but nobody finds out it was you, so you don't get in trouble. On the other hand, nobody finds out it was you, so your friends don't think you're any cooler, either.

That's sort of how Technorati sucks. It's not anything special. It's not legendary sucking. They not only suck, they suck at sucking.

Technorati Sucks, Week 12

Here's the blurb for this blog on its Technorati page.

As always it says "No authority yet" which is Technorati-speak for "no one links to it" which is false. It says my rank among all the blogs in their registry is 3,410,747, which I am happy with. I only wish my rank were closer to 6 billion, then it would coincide with my own estimation of how weird and intrinsically unpopular I am. Elsewhere it says it's been 106 days since an update. Doing the math I figured that puts the last update, by their reckoning, on March 1.

Let's check that to be absolutely sure. From March 1 to April 1, is 31 days. To May 1 is another 30 days, for a subtotal of 61. To June 1 is another 31 days, for a subtotal of 61+31 = 92 days. To June 15, today, is another 14 days, for a grand total of 92+14 = 106 days. Yes. I am correct.

So how is it that they, Technorati, which THEMSELVES SAY that this very blog has not been updated since MARCH 1, have NEVERTHELESS put a screen shot of a post, namely Accept Mickey in Your Heart, showing art I did of Mickey Mouse being crucified, which appears nowhere else on this blog, except when I posted it ON MARCH 20?

How can they show a screen shot of a March 20 post and then have the gall to tell me I haven't updated since March 1?

It's easy. It's because Technorati sucks, and it lies out its suck hole.

Technorati Sucks, Week 11

Subtitle: I Was A Teenage Arrow Man

This is Aunt Snitch, from the Rare Serious Poem. It is also my second favorite photo taken by my Father. It shows her "loving" some kittens against their wills. Her name was Aunt Alta. The picture nails her chief trait, her certainty that whatever she's doing for you is for your own good, because she loves you so fucking much.

One of the things Aunt Snitch did to me, besides betray me to my Mother and get me tortured, was buy me Arrow shirts for every birthday, Christmas, Easter, Whitsuntide, & Epiphany. I think she gave me shirts on United Nations Day once (October 24, if you want to celebrate it next time around). She gave me shirts for my parents' birthdays, for finishing school years, for starting school years, and sometimes for existing.

I was required to thank Alta for each Arrow shirt, thus encouraging her to give me more. She wanted me to know that she was my best Aunt ever. My Mother wanted me to know that Alta surely had a hundred thou' squirreled away somewhere, because the only thing she ever spent money on was my shirts. Therefore it was my job to inherit it and use it to keep Mommy happy in her autumn years. I played along until I hit 21 and could legally drink.

OK, so I had hundreds of Arrow shirts. I didn't have to wear them did I?

Yes! I had to! On no account was any money going to be spent in my parents' household for any more shirts for me. "You have shirts" "But I don't like them." "Shut up."

I wanted to get a paper route to buy my own damn shirts. They said no! It would take away from time I spent doing chores for them! It would take away from homework time! "You'll be happy with the shirts you have and the money we dole out to you."

Don't let the ad from the 70s fool you. Arrow shirts were NEVER extroverted except for the one hour in the 70s it took the photographer to create the photo of the guy on the left.

This collage shows you all the other Arrow Men from 1900 to the current millennium. It's painful for me to look at this collage and relive those memories. The horror of it all. So many sucky shirts, for so long.

Will Technorati suck as long? We'll see.

Technorati Sucks, Week 10

My Adventures in Bloggery blog has thus far been ignored by Technorati for 118 days, while this one has been ignored by them for 92 days.

Today I googled "Technorati Sucks" and got 1,340,000 hits. I thought I would be on the first page for sure, maybe down a ways on the first page, but surely in the top ten.

No, but I made it to #18 with last week's comments on worm fucking and buffalo shit, and how oh by the way Technorati sucks.

I was also on page 3. My Technorati Sucks, Week 6 made it to #29, probably because it had "does not work" in French, German, and Japanese. The foreign hits may have given me a boost.

At #27 Is Jim Belshaw's New England, Australia blog, which has been ignored by Technorati for over a year.

At #23, at onlinejournalismus.de, Fiete Stegers began a post with, "Die neue Version von Technorati, die seit einiger Zeit online ist, gefällt mir überhaupt nicht," which I think is a very polite way of saying Technorati sucks in German. Also the post was titled "Technorati sucks."

White Space
edged my Week 9 out at #17 with an April 7 post titled "Technorati sucks" which reports a "last updated 377 days ago" after pings to Technorati went ignored.

GetSheila posted a list last January of ways Technorati "still sucks," making it to #15.

#13 is going to be hard to beat if he or she gets going. The blogger goes by the name "technorati sucks" as well as calling the blog itself Technorati Sucks. My only hope in passing this one is that there appears to be only one post up, for now.

Way back in September of 2006 Gadgetizer was saying, "Technorati is the biggest search engine for searching blogs. Too bad it sucks." Clearly Gadgetizer is benefitting from long-term exposure to make #9.

Jim Belshaw, seen at #27, reached #8 with a Technorati sucks post to his Personal Reflections.

Speaking of long-term exposure, #3 is a post on white pebble dated September 17th, 2005, containing an open letter to Technorati telling them why they suck.

The #1 hit when googling technorati sucks is a post by Jason Kottke on kottke.org proving the early bird gets the google hit: Mr. Kottke said So long, Technorati already on August 19, 2005.

Oh, and by the way, Technorati sucks ass without a straw.

Technorati Sucks, Week 9

Furniture of My Life.

Anitra Freeman, my love and lovely unlawful wife, gets on jags. Once she helped found a commune, donating all the money herself -- the ultimate in jag-getting-on. Other lesser jags have been the internet (13 years jag), computers in general (since before the first Star Wars), the Society for Creative Anachronisms, where she liked to specialize as a Jewish aristocrat in 12th Century Moorish Spain, sea-chanteys (she has a website for them), song parodies à la the Raging Grannies, science fiction (she has a website for it), the fantasy classic Silverlock by John Meyers Meyers whose name is a jag (she has a website for it), mystery novels (she has a website for them), webrings for a couple of years (she was managing 18 and a member of 80 more, each membership signifying another frikkin' website). Her current website incorporates all her previous websites and is one giant fucking jag, consisting of over 2,100 webpages and growing jaggerifically.

There's the jag she calls seeking dialog with conservatives, and which I call teasing the fundamentalists. This has been done primarily over the internet and has gone on for 10 years, although it shows signs of moderating. At the exact moment now that I write she is "dialoging" moderately with a moderate creationist. They are in fact arguing online about which of them is most moderate.

A recent jag that went south was the book-trading-by-internet jag which started with the attempt to unload a bunch of books while replacing them with fewer, so creating more space in which to live. It didn't work. She has more books than ever and you can't breathe in my room without getting a book entangled in your nose-hairs.

The latest jag is the one I reported in this week's Adventures in Irony column, gardening in the Union Hotel garden plot. The Union Hotel is not really a hotel but the subsidized apartment building we live in. It's downtown, but it has a tiny yard which overlooks the southern entrance to the Seattle railroad tunnel, and they've recently created a 72 square foot garden there.

This is one of her jags that has become part of the Furniture of My Life. She not only helps tomato plants have sex with themselves, and pours stinking compost juice on everything, she gets out there and sprinkles jars and jars of my own hard-to-find and to afford cayenne pepper, to keep the outdoor rats from raiding the plants. She spent yesterday putting netting over the plant babies to keep the birds out. Her room is getting packed with garden crap, including newborn seedlings in pans of dirt that she dotes over more than you would cuddly kittens. (She'd put them in my room, too, but the books are in the way.)

[Above: What healthy people adore. Below: What Anitra adores.]

Yesterday UPS dropped off two pounds of fucking worms (literally fucking each other in peat moss) in a box the size of two bread boxes at the Union. They were addressed to Anitra. Anitra ordered them. They will be put in a special worm bin that hasn't arrived yet. In the meantime they are living in IN OUR BATHROOM in the box they came in, which has been filled out with compost (i.e. vegetable shit) plus worm food she made herself. The worm food, which I call buffalo shit, is made of old fruit, old vegetables, old bread, coffee grounds, a little old bone meal (for calcium! worms need calcium for their teeth!) and old shredded newspapers to keep their precious dirt loose and aerated.

That, that buffalo shit, as I call it, was in a large deep pan in our refrigerator this morning where it had spent the night aging un-lidded so as to best infuse the other contents of the refrigerator with the delightful aroma of buffalo shit -- an example of the Furniture of My Life.

Also, this morning, I checked my email, and found I hadn't heard from Technorati.

Technorati Sucks, Week 8

The blog you are looking at has been signed up on Technorati since February 22, 2007. These posts have been added since then, not counting this one:

That's 65 posts by my count. That's 65 posts that Technorati's software hasn't managed to "see", because Technorati sucks.

Technorati Sucks, Week 7

The new insult from Technorati is in the new way they signal to me that they still suck. It used to be that when I brought up "my" home page at Technorati they told me that my blogs had "no links yet." This was false, therefore they were still sucking, as demonstrated by putting that particular false information out. Now the false information takes the form "No authority yet."

Note the "ping" links. Here is where the problem with Technorati primarily lies. I click on the "ping" links and I get this sort of thing:

No problem I think, the pinging hasn't had a chance to take effect. I'll wait. And I wait. See where it says there's been no change in Adventures in Bloggery for 97 days? There's been change every pinging week! That's what the pinging is for! It's to tell them about the changes! 97 days is almost 14 weeks. That's at least 13 pings that have had no effect at all! I'm so fucking polite I didn't even complain about it for the first fucking 6 weeks that they did nothing! I only started complaining 7 weeks ago! Don't you wish you had me for a neighbor? I wouldn't bitch about your loud fucking parties with your loser trailer trash yahoos until the parties ran 6 fucking weeks! Only after listening to your dickwad buddies puke their guts in my nasturtiums for 6 fucking weeks, would I knock ever so gently on your door, and six days later, when you condescended to answer the door during a lull in the party, say, "Excuse me kind Sir or Madam, but would you mind please turning the volume of your stereo down? Please? I would be most appreciative."

That's how fucking nice I've been about this. Here's your Ping, assholes.

Technorati Sucks, Week 6

I don't actually know if Technorati sucks at this exact moment. The .mac people, who provide the email service by which I am awaiting a response from technorati, are themselves sucking at present.

They are knowing they are sucking. They are sucking in English: "The .Mac service you are looking for is temporarily unavailable while we perform scheduled maintenance." They are sucking in German: "Der .Mac Dienst, nach dem Sie suchen, ist zur Zeit nicht verfügbar, da planmäßige Wartungsarbeiten durchgeführt werden." They are sucking in French: "Le service .Mac que vous recherchez est momentanément indisponible en raison d’une maintenance planifiée." They are sucking in Japanese: "現在、定期メンテナンス中につき、お探しの.Macサービスはご利用いただくことができません。" Or anyway I think that was Japanese. It had what could either be taken as a red sun on white next to it, or a bloody egg, sunny-side-up.

Who sucks more, he who sucks and knows he sucks or he who sucks and knows it not? A. Whichever one is Technorati.

Technorati Sucks, Week 5

Technorati inched toward an acknowledgment of a shred or fragment of my existence this week! They still haven't either written me personally about my complaints or solved my problems, but I was included in a customer survey. No doubt either all of Technorati users were included in the survey, or I was included only by luck of a pseudo-random draw, but this is wonderful evidence for me that I am on a list of creatures that have some feeble semblance of life and dealings with Technorati!

The survey was conducted by survey-monkey Zoomerang. I like saying "survey-monkey." Survey-monkey Zoomerang's basic professional price is $599 per year. Technorati can pay survey-monkey $599 per year to tell them in general how much they are loved, but they can't spend 3 cents for a pile of electrons with which to answer my complaints personally. Survey-monkey. Survey-monkey.

Technorati Sucks, Week 4

So here's the drill. Every Friday morning I will check my inbox and see if Technorati has responded by email to my complaints. I will also check to see if the problem is fixed. If not, I will post something like this with a title, "Technorati Sucks, Week [One More Than Last Time]". This will make a trajectory of posts over time, which I hope will be pleasing to me in the manner that I am accustomed to being pleased by modern conceptual art. This is possible as I have been to college, and have learned there to enjoy modern conceptual art, because there was little else.

[Shown: Piece by artist R. Mutt, alias Marcel Duchamp, 1917, that has been named the most influential modern art work of all time. I am in total agreement, because I have been to college.]

Technorati Sucks, Week 3

I sent emails to Technorati telling them that even though their software says I successfully claimed 2 blogs with them their stats never update properly for either site and their search engine can't find anything at either one. I got automated replies within one minute telling me that the emails were received. The automated replies said they would try to have an answer within a week. It's now been 3 weeks.

All they have to do to stop sucking in my judgment is to send me emails periodically, like more often than once every eon, to say something useless but reassuring such as, "We are sorry we are so slow fixing your very important problem." They could even say, "The truth is we haven't worked on your problem at all, we've all been too busy being strung out on dope and screwing ourselves, each other, and our dog, which we named after you. Catch you in the down time, dweeb." That would be better than being totally ignored. Technorati sucks.

Not Into Auto-Marginalization

If you are one of the one or two readers of this blog, you may have noticed the Third Party Functionality device that was temporarily at the bottom of the right hand column of these pages. It held a link to Technorati and a search engine that didn't work at all. I pointed that fact out to Technorati in an email to them two weeks ago as of today.

They have not got back to me to say anything at all. I expected something by now like, sorry for the wait, we're still working on your problem, don't give up hope. I wouldn't have minded if it was an automated assurance, like the recordings between muzak when you're on hold on the phone. But I haven't got butkis (sp?) from them.

I also pointed out to them that in the over two months since I signed with them they haven't acknowledged one update of Adventures in Bloggery.

My theory is that their software wouldn't handle these blogs because something about them put them outside their parameters. And the software isn't set up to flag the user in that event.

Now, I am perfectly capable of writing in internet obscurity until I die. It suits my image of myself. Muse of Other, and all, Misunderstood Genius and all, I Belong In Exile In Paris, Damn Why Didn't I Take French In High School, and all ...

Ha, ha, no seriously, I want readers. Why the fuck would I care about Technorati in the first place? So I'll be trying other strategies that don't involve their worthless ass.

Fly

Fly for the benefit of Technorati's spiders.

Technorati Profile
