Coincidence?

Video Find of the Day

I checked my YouTube playlist of Algerian Rai today, and found out that every single video has been pulled. Damn. So I looked for some new Algerian Rai and found one with a song called "Dana Dana". Then, I noticed that there are songs with the same name all over the world. Are these all the same song? I don't think so. But I'm so retarded aurally I could be wrong. How is this coincidence to be explained? Is it purely coincidence, or is there something about the sound of "dana" that inspires people to sing about it, and repeat it? I think "dana" is wired into the human brain.

Pretty Woman, Hindi style

Video Find of the Day

Recently YouTube has begun to recommend videos to logged in users on its home page. So based on my history of video viewing, which they have preserved for all time in a crypt in a sub-sub-basement of their San Bruno CA headquarters, third drawer from the right, they tell me what else I'd like to see. For some reason I cannot fathom, they have recommended to me a lot of videos involving naked people of both sexes in, or stepping out of, showers. Probably a mistake. But they have got some things right.

I had never heard of the 2003 Bollywood movie Kal Ho Naa Ho. The Wikipedia article says though that it "grossed over Rs 600 million worldwide, becoming the top grossing Bollywood Film Worldwide, second top-grossing movie in India, as well as the top-grossing Bollywood film in the overseas market that year." So maybe I should have heard of it, for that reason.

But I'm really surprised I did not know that this scene from the film existed. O Lordy. Can you count the cultural cross-overs? I lost track.

Local Bollywood

Video Find of the Day

I still haven't edited yesterday's videos of Flamenco dancing. I'm not too hopeful about them because I didn't get a good seat for them. Today I got a crop of Bhangra Bollywood and such videos to edit. I'm much more hopeful about them. I got a good seat up front. If the sound isn't too bad we're in business.

Meanwhile, here's a pre-existing video by and of Nalini, a dancer from the Ukraine who is now living in Seattle.

Extended Musical Flirtation

Video Find of the Day

I LOVE BOLLYWOOD! 7 minutes 18 seconds nonstop flirtation! I don't know what she sees in him. Waylon Jennings says, "Ladies love outlaws, like babies love stray dogs." You might question whether these are ladies but I have no doubt that they are, many times over.

Cultural Dissonance

Easter is my favorite Christian holiday because it makes no sense whatsoever to me, and I do enjoy senselessness, no matter how much I say to the contrary.

The whole death and resurrection story makes no sense whatsoever. If Jesus is God, it's no surprise that He can resurrect Himself. So where's the drama?

Then there's the Easter Bunny business. Who thought up that abomination of nature? A rabbit that lays colored hard boiled eggs with stupid little decals glued to them? Couldn't they at least be soft-boiled? I hate dried out yolks. You know, a little salmonellosis isn't going to kill most of us.

I think I finally figured out why they hide the eggs. The whole business of gorging on eggs at Easter-time isn't a pagan idea at all. It stems from the fact that the Medieval Church prohibited the eating of eggs during Lent. So when Lent was over there was a surplus. Hiding the eggs ritually displaced the blame for the unavailability of eggs from the real culprit, the Church, and dumped it all on the bunny. They were trying to make us hate the bunny and love the Church. But it didn't work. Nobody can hate the bunny. He's a cute bunny, yes he is! YES HE IS A CUTE BUNNY!

But why are the eggs colored? I read that the red ones represent the blood of Jesus and the green ones represent the renewal of plant-life at spring. What do the purple ones represent? Tinky Winky?

In order to convey to my Christian friends exactly how senseless Easter appears to me, I offer this video I found on YouTube which I also don't get, and which I hope will instill within others the same kind of cultural dissonance that I derive from Easter. It's a Bollywood film with Cajun French subtitles added "for educational purposes." I want to know what school uses this material in its courses, and how their graduates are getting on in life.
