Video Find of the Day
The Dow fell about 777.7 today, a Biblical number representing infinity in a decimal fraction. Let's put this event in further perspective.
Stock Market crash 1929
Ouch, an 80% loss over 4 years! But the Dow fell only 7% in one day, today. Let's see -- compounded daily, 4 years, carry the one, drop the two, roll the three -- oh shit.
Wait a minute, the Dow is only one index! Yeah, it isn't that significant! It's only based on 30 selected stocks! Let's look at the Nasdaq Composite, based on nearly 3000 stocks. Oh, sure, that will be better.
WHAT? A NINE PERCENT DROP? NEVER MIND.
OK. Let's look at it the other way. So the economy tanks. So we end up like India, which, in spite of having all our tech jobs, has less than a quarter of our GDP per capita. So our middle classes all end up working at Pizza Hut, like these guys in Jalandhar, Punjab. You think that would be bad?

Coincidence?
Video Find of the Day
I checked my YouTube playlist of Algerian Rai today, and found out that every single video has been pulled. Damn. So I looked for some new Algerian Rai and found one with a song called "Dana Dana". Then, I noticed that there are songs with the same name all over the world. Are these all the same song? I don't think so. But I'm so retarded aurally I could be wrong. How is this coincidence to be explained? Is it purely coincidence, or is there something about the sound of "dana" that inspires people to sing about it, and repeat it? I think "dana" is wired into the human brain.

More Rythms of India
Four men with the same group we saw in Bhangra in Seattle. This is the last video I have from this year's Folklife Festival. It ends abruptly as the camera ran out of memory. But I think it's a keeper anyway.

Bhangra in Seattle
Yesterday I got to see Bhangra live for the first time, courtesy of Rhythms of India and others performing at the Northwest Folklife Festival here in Seattle. I have to say, I really enjoy the challenge of filming this sort of thing. Trying to decide where to point the camera and how much to take in at every moment is a weird, geeky, rush. My favorite moments in this occur when the dancers at one side of the stage cross over to the dancers at the other side and I succeed in following one set through the cross-over. That is so cool.

Non-Tuesday Free Lunch
Video Find of the Day
It's not true that there's no such thing as a free lunch.
Here at the subsidized haven known as the Union Hotel (not a real hotel) we have a free lunch every Tuesday. But today, because it was Easter, we got an extra free lunch, in spite of it not being Tuesday. So there's even such a thing as a non-Tuesday free lunch.
This miracle was made possible by volunteers from the UW chapter of Sigma Beta Rho, a "national multicultural Fraternity based upon the principles of Society, Brotherhood, and Remembrance." It was founded in 1996 at the University of Pennsylvania as "a vehicle to instill unity amongst its members, promote South Asian culture, and aid the greater community at large."
Lunch was brunch. We had scrambled eggs and bacon, biscuits, waffles, and ham. And oranges and grapes.
I showed my appreciation by wearing the one shirt I have from India. Anitra found out that one of the guys serving us does bhangra.
So, here I am, recovering from the flu, and wanting a vid. What am I going to celebrate Easter with?
Bhangra!

Now -- Just the Girls
Video Find of the Day
I'm finding more Bhangra by women. This is a good one. I don't know what CSUN means. California State University, Northridge? I guess.

Bhangra Times Three
Video Find of the Day
Bhangra is a form of dance that began with celebrations of the Vaisaki or Baisakhi, a Punjabi Spring festival held in April. It is not only an old harvest festival, but a 1699 celebration of Baisakhi was the occasion of a major founding event of Sikhism. That explains the archaic costumes that are often worn. They are in imitation of the latest fashions at the end of the 17th century, in the Punjab.
But mainly, we're talking dance. And song. There's songs, too. Here's some without the costumes and with.

Bhangra's Cup of Humor
Video Find of the Day
Another key ingredient of Bhangra is humor. It isn't sad music, it's celebratory. You almost never see a Bhangra dancer who isn't grinning ear to ear. Here's a clip entitled "Places You Do Not Do Bhangra" that makes the point clear.

Tumbi, Tumbi and Dholki
Video Find of the Day
Another piece of the Bhangra experience is this one-stringed instrument, the tumbi. Here's a demonstration to "urban" music, which I hear is catching on with the kids.
Ha, just kidding. I like it too.
Tumbi - Tumbiwalla does urban music again!
Here's a single tumbi played with dholki, a smaller cousin of the dhol. The picture is grainy but the sound is pretty decent, as these things go.

Lethal Dholis
Video Find of the Day
Like most people, I find Bhangra astonishing. So I thought, maybe it would be good to look at pieces of it before getting overwhelmed by the whole. One of the pieces is the dhol, the drum that is used.
I think the guy in the middle is the Alpha Drummer.
