Too Much Time on Facebook
Video Find of the Day
Because Timothy Harris, Real Change Director, confessed to joining Facebook, I was deeply concerned, and went in after him, to help shove him in a van and deliver him to the de-programmers.
Once in Facebook I became lost. I made friends with people I thought were already friends. But now, I can poke them, send them kisses, and write on their walls.
Because of the extraordinary amount of wasted time all this represents, today's video find reduces to a plea that pole dancing finally be accepted as an Olympic sport. I mean, look at this. Really. This beats the parallel bars with a two-by-four.

I really just wanted a decent version of Anitra's Dance from Peer Gynt. I found this one, from the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival. Terrible video, terrible audio, but you get the idea. This guy couldn't read music, but he was a genius.

Medieval Music

I don't know how it happened; I just realized that for the past year I have let Medieval music be off my radar. I've searched for renaissance music but it never occurred to me to search for Medieval. Well, that's simply wrong. I mean, besides having a life-long dream of banging pots in a Chinese funeral procession, I have dreamed of making raucous Medieval noise. So here's some. First, a Spanish ditty.

What's This?
According to the program the second group performing at the Bhangra and Bollywood Show at Folklife this year was Taal. Taal is the generic term for the rhythms of classical Indian music, or rhythms period, or the name of a famous Indian movie that Roger Ebert gave excess thumbs up. The announcer told us it was not the name of this group. He said the correct name was something that sounded to me like Chunny Chunny. I have looked up everything I could think of that could be a spelling of a word sounding like chunny to me, and have not found these people. Hopefully I will get an answer to who they are soon, on YouTube.
Until then, here is an amazing performance of Indian dance by a group of young ladies of indeterminate ages.

Bhangra in Seattle
Yesterday I got to see Bhangra live for the first time, courtesy of Rhythms of India and others performing at the Northwest Folklife Festival here in Seattle. I have to say, I really enjoy the challenge of filming this sort of thing. Trying to decide where to point the camera and how much to take in at every moment is a weird, geeky, rush. My favorite moments in this occur when the dancers at one side of the stage cross over to the dancers at the other side and I succeed in following one set through the cross-over. That is so cool.

Local Bollywood

I still haven't edited yesterday's videos of Flamenco dancing. I'm not too hopeful about them because I didn't get a good seat for them. Today I got a crop of Bhangra Bollywood and such videos to edit. I'm much more hopeful about them. I got a good seat up front. If the sound isn't too bad we're in business.
Meanwhile, here's a pre-existing video by and of Nalini, a dancer from the Ukraine who is now living in Seattle.
